Having been shown a recording of a BBC program where an RSPCA officer introduced an Akita as a fighting dog and stating to the owner that 'they do have a bit of a reputation, don't they' I figured I'd put this FAQ to to clear the matter up once and for all.
The Akita has never been bred for fighting, it was never used for fighting in Japan and it was never used for killing Bears!!
The only time I have ever heard of an Akita being used for fighting was over here in the UK, and as we all know, there are some very sad people over here that will use any dog they can for their sick enjoyment!
A for people saying they were used for hunting and killing bears, do me a favour, do you honestly think an Akita, or any other dog for that matter, would be strong enough and dangerous enough to bring down an angry bear??
The use of Akitas in bear hunting was simply for tracking and cornering until the owner made his way to the area to do the killing.
This is no different to the way many breeds of dog have been and still are today used for hunting.
So there you have it, simple really, the answer is no, the Akita is not and never has been a fighting dog!

Some of our Akitas currently looking for new homes.
JAWT 515 - Treble
Treble is a young girl of two years old currently based in Stockon on Tees.
She needs to find a new home due to the fact she has decided she no longer wants to live with her litter sister or her mother. She could however be placed with a laid back male pending succesfull introductions. She cannot live with cats and is not used to young children either.
Treble can be nervous around strangers and as such we would advise a few visits to build her confidence and trust prior to adopting.
Her owners will be sad to see her go and only want what is best for her.
Could you offer Treble the love and trust she so desperately needs?

JAWT 556 - Yoshi
This little fella is clearly only a few weeks old and based in Ireland. He was an unwanted xmas present and dumped at a shelter.
Thankfully a rescue worker was informed and now has him safe in foster and started him off on his vaccinations etc.
Transport can be arranged and applications are now being taken for this little boy. More photos in the "playground" on our forum.
He is a stunning boy and we are sure he wont be waiting long!!
JAWT 521 - Keera
Keera is a lovely girl of around 5 years old currently boarded in kennels in the Newcastle upon Tyne area.
She has not lived with other dogs or children although has found a male akita friend in the kennels who makes her smile and wag her tail. She had been with her owner all of her life sadly no longer wanted due to the arrival of a baby.
Keera was always fine with strangers coming into her house and she travels well also.
She can be a little apprehensive when first meeting people but is a very friendly girl soon after.
If you would like more information on Keera, please get in touch!

This gorgoeus boy is just 13 months old and finds him self in need of a new home through no fault of his own.
Vito is based in the Derby area and coming from a family home, is used to young children and could potentially live with the correct female pending careful introductions.
Vito is neutered & upto date with his vaccinations, he is loveable friendly boy who adores playing with toys, especially his boy. Good basic obedience level of training and eager to learn. Not tested around cats, but good with children, other dogs etc making him a great candidate for a family home.

JAWT 509 - CJ
CJ is a handsome young chap of 3 years old currently based in Salford.
He is being rehomed due to a change in his owners work commitments, leaving him alone for long periods and she does not feel he is receiving the attention he deserves.
He`s an excitable boy, loves to play and has basic command knowledge. He will pull to begin with on walks but soon settles in to heel again.
He is a friendly boy, but he does not like other dogs or cats. He has never lived with children and due to his excitable nature we would only consider a home with dog savvy older children.
JAWT 587 Kita
Kita is a stunning girl of 3 years old, she is currently based in South Cheshire and is in need of a new home through no fault of her own.
Kita is slightly nervous of other dogs and some situations and we would ask for an experienced home with out other furries for her.
Once she gets to know you she is an adorable sweet girl who loves to sit and give paw for treats!
Kita has lived with young children but is quite nervous around them so older dog savy kids only please!
If she is the girl for you please get in touch!
