About The Japanese Akita Welfare Trust

"All members of the trust give their time on a voluntary basis"

The JAWT (Japanese Akita Welfare Trust) was founded by a small group of dedicated Akita owners, who recognised the need for a pure breed rescue in the UK.

The group decided from the beginning that not only was there a need of a rescue and rehoming service, but also the fact that the breed needed a body who would be able to give unbiased opinions to the general public on the welfare and health aspects of this wonderful breed.

The Trust now has over thirty area co-ordinators working across the country, advising owners, rescuing, rehoming, and retraining Akitas. Our national co-ordinator makes sure that all aspects are covered by our area co-ordinators, and a board of six Trustees maintains the day to day running of the Trust.

We take dogs from all of the main UK rescue organisations including the RSPCA, NCDL, BATTERSEA DOGS' AND CATS' HOME and many of the County Councils' dog pounds, as well as advising them on the correct way of assessing Akita temperament.  The staff at Battersea Dogs' and Cats' Home are also seeing an increase in the number of Akitas that require new homes.  If you are interested in re-homing an Akita from Battersea, please contact Nicola, Battersea's Breed Rescue co-ordinator, on:

At this point in time the number of Akitas being taken into care is growing day by day, which is of great concern to all of us at the Trust. The only way we feel we can reverse this trend is to go forward with our education program in the hope that this may save the lives of some of our magnificent dogs.
