Please dont smack your dog - no matter what age and no matter what for. We come across dogs of all ages and walks of life who have suffered all too many smacks from irresponsible owners (better description can be supplied on demand normally) never mind owners who are trying their best to train but just perhaps with little experience and the wrong kind of advice. All you will do is make your dog scared and this does not bear well for a healthy relationship as there will be no trust.
I dont agree with crate training for toilet training either.
It can be very frustrating and at 8 months he may seem to be more grown up than he really is, but he`s still a baby. My Keyko was 6 months when she came to live here but was not housetrained either. And suffered from excitable urination her entire life - you learn to manage it. Kuma was almost 18 months when she appeared here and still had some accidents, they learn though.
Agree with what has been suggested and if you come home to a puddle, simply dry it up and clean properly - any trace of urine could act as a "trigger" to encourage him to pee on the same spot again. Using a voice command like Lucie suggested works well and all of mine get excited when I say "pee pee time"
Trust the advice given and I hope you follow it to help to form and maintain a trusting relationship with your boy.
Good luck and please keep us posted on his positive progress!
