Glucosamine and Chrondroitin for dogs 2010/03/19 10:28 Karma: 36
Andrew can you advise what the dosage ratio is per lb/kg of the dogs weight for the glucosamine to be effective.

Found this on one of the websites for Glucosamine for dogs.

....A good rule of thumb is to look for 750mg of Glucosamine HCl and Glucosamine Sulfate per 50 pounds of weight....

Not veterinary trained [obv.] so dont know how accurate that is that would make 1500mg for Jasmine as she just over 90 pounds.

Side Effects
Rare. May see diarrhea with overdosage?

Hi

That sounds about right. The product I use (Seraquin) recommends a dose rate of 1500 to 2000mg of glucosamine for a 40kg dog, and around 1200 to 1500mg of chondroitin. One should use this dose for 4-6 weeks, then you can gradually wean down to half the initial dose as the maintenance level.

There's an awful lot talked about different products and their effectiveness, my main advice would be to stick with high quality products with good purity.

Thanks Andrew, will try these doses on Jasmine as she's 6 next month and I take her running [CaniX] quite a bit.

She had a good hip score at 12 months, so there are no hips issues. I'm going to keep her running as long as she wants to and let her slow down as she get's older.

Thanks for the reply andrew, good for us too

We were talking to our vet recently about Zeke's dosage of this and she advised us to up his and also said that the human pills we currently give him don't always get absorbed as well as proper dog meds would so have some dog ones on order x

Can do, I've seen the odd dog who has been sick on the supplement, but you'll soon find out if it's tolerated!
