Newbie here- Hip Scores 2010/06/13 11:21 Karma: 0
Right i'm determined to find out everything(or near enough lol) about akitas before actually getting one. Hoping to get one in the next few months read up on most of it, but im still slightly confused by this so i'd be grateful for any advice.

Right from my understanding it's the lower the number the better as there is less hipdysplacia present? so two parents with a lowish hip number would mean the puppies would have a low hip number?

Thanks all!

That's pretty much it but a low hip score from the parents is no guarantee that the pup will not suffer from dysplasia it just means the chances are less than if the parents have a higher score.

If its something that really worries you then maybe an adult dog would be a better choice for you, there are plenty on the re-homing pages that are just waiting for someone to give them a home, they are fit, healthy and considerably cheaper than buying a puppy from a breeder!

I agree with Daniel, there is no guarantee. If it's something that you are really concerned about I would ask to see a few generations back too as genetically it could come through.

Unless you really want a puppy there are some fantastic dogs for re-homing, we have 3 rehomes from here and they are wonderful x

Thanks
Yep i've found a boy i've been looking at for adoption as he's older.
I was just curious as to how it worked.
After adopting am i able to take him to the vet to get his hip score? or is it something that really isn't that important to know if you assume that they all had hip dysplasia?

Thanks again! sorry i ask too many questions i'm just scared of missing something

To be honest with you, the three we adopted at 2 yrs, one at 10 weeks and one at 8 months all went for a check up at the vets as soon as I could.

I wouldn't have changed them for the world whatever the outcome, but they were all given a clean bill of health

I have asked about dysplasia in akitas at my vets and they say its not really something to worry about as its not a very common problem in the breed unlike German shepards for example where the breed standard encourages a sloping back.
No need to apologise for asking questions, we all do it!

if its an older dog not a puppy from a breeder, i would have thought the rescue who are rehoming him would have a good idea of any medical issues that he may have.

where are you adopting him from? how old is he?

hope you post some piccies up! ask as many questions as you like, thats how we all learn

Hi.

Jasmine was hip scored at 12 months, the earliest age that it can be done, only because we were going to breed from her.

As it's requires a general anesthetic it's not something I'd do unless your breeding from a dog or a bitch.

You would only get a spayed dog x-rayed if there was something wrong with the hips.

Hope that answers yours question.
Jasmine from the Persian Yasmin, "gift from God"
Taido, the 3' stairgate jumper. Akitas don't bounce they jump
